Opinion:

I do not have a particular stance on the issue. However, I firmly believe in understanding and respect across the borders.

There has much animosity between mainlanders and Hong Kong-ers these past years. As a "mainlander" so to speak, I have constantly been told of how bad Hong Kong-ers treat mainlanders. Gradually, I, along with my peers in China, have also developed an animosity towards the Hong Kong-ers, and this notion that we are better than them, and that we don't need anything from that small island city.

Having lived in Vancouver for more than 6 years, I have been in touch with a lot of Hong Kong-ers. One of my favorite teachers is from Hong Kong, and I would never think of her as a person who treats others unkindly. It all comes down to understanding, and thinking from others' shoes.

At St. Paul's, this issue is not as pronounced, since students don't talk about it much. I don't particularly believe that more awareness of the Hong Kong-mainland conflict should be brought up at St. Paul's. Having Hum V discuss this issue is enough, I believe, to give students insights into this modern phenomenon.
