I personally understand the cause of such conflict. In a place as special as Hong Kong, the eastern and western cultures clash with each other in a post-colonial era. I do not agree with the rationale of the protesters but I respect their rights to peacefully protest. I strongly detest any behavior that would interfere with the daily lives of Hong Kong people. Sadly, as far as I’m concerned, some of these protesters used derogative languages towards mainland visitors and caused serious traffic issues.
I interact with young people from Hong Kong all the time, therefore these conflicts have repeated instigated conversations between us. While some of them are really reasonable and are open to a candid discussion, some of them are headstrong with their beliefs. It definitely made me more sensitive in interacting with them.
There is definitely bias towards the issue. Hong Kong is soaked in western media, which has barely any balance regarding the mainland. This fostered a skewed perception of not only the CCP but the Chinese public as well.
Yes, I feel like more awareness is needed at St. Paul’s. People need a more balanced version of the story. Not only should the Hong Kong side of the story be heard, but also the voices from the mainland.
