It started as a conversation between two friends. It was December of 2014, after the Occupy Central movement affected thousands of Hong Kong citizens, including our own families. As we discussed the tension between Hong Kong and mainland China, we wondered why the two regions are so fundamentally different - or whether they are really as different as they seemed. While we both grew up in Hong Kong, our families have origins in mainland China. This gives us a unique perspective on the stereotypes of mainland Chinese in Hong Kong. Motivated by our interest in our own heritage, we developed a project that would not only address the origins of the cultural differences between Hong Kong and China, but also propose a response to ameliorate the situation.

Our project ties together not only our interest in our cultural heritage and current events, but also our love for the fine arts and photography. Through interviewing local Hong Kong residents, taking photos of and creating pieces of art representing cultural elements unique to Hong Kong, we strive to gain a better understanding of the cultural differences between Hong Kong and mainland China and come up with a response to try to bridge the gap. We hope that through our project, we will help dispel misconceptions and raise awareness on the unspoken cultural conflict between Hong Kong and mainland China.
